New Landscape Photography - After Light It's All About Composition in Landscape Photography

You've heard time and time again that landscape photography is all about the natural light that nature provides to you at the time of taking the photograph. This is extremely true, but even if the light is perfect your photo won't stand out unless you composed it in the best way that you can.

Okay, so what constitutes great composition is always going to be extremely subjective and there are no 100% right or wrong answer and yes sometime you have to go against the norm to tell your story. However, there are four major things that I look for when I'm taking a photo.

The first thing I always try to follow is the rule of thirds, do a Google search to find out more but essentially try to avoid having your horizons going straight through the middle of your photos and definitely try to avoid putting your subjects in the centre of your photo. If you're taking a photo of a really impressive rock then don't put it bang in the centre of your photo. Perhaps you could take a photo with ¾ sky and the rock placed on the right hand or left hand side it would make for a different and interesting landscape photograph. Always try to think outside of the box.

If I'm taking a landscape photograph of something like a mountain range that is a little distance away I always ensure that I include something that qualifies as foreground interest. Here's an example, I want to take a photo of a hill that is perhaps 500M away, no just taking a photo of that hill would look pretty boring. If I managed to include a nice rock or tree in the foreground then that adds depth to the photograph and makes it significantly more interesting.

Using the same scenario as above another composition trick is to add leading lines into your photo to literally 'lead' people's eyes towards the main subject in your photograph. So how could we include this in the above photo? Well we've found our hill and we've found our tree, is there a fence for example leading up to the direction of the hill (this in itself is also foreground interest), is there a creek running down from the hill as this could be used as a leading line as well. Leading lines work really well if you get them right.

One of the last composition techniques when taking landscape photographs I employ is called framing. What do you think might be more interesting? Taking a photo standing on a beach or standing back in the tree line with a shot of a branch at the top of my photo 'framing' my photo? Again do a search on Google images from examples of this.

Nice A Pond - Is For Life

Deciding to introduce a pond to our garden is an important decision. We should think carefully about what we want from one before we jump in and dig a hole. What are our reasons for wanting one and are those reasons enough to change our garden dramatically to install one.

When you add one to your garden then yes you are adding a thing of beauty that you should be proud of and enjoy for many years to come. There is great enjoyment in planning and building one and the achievement is great. Once one has been added then it should stay even if you move home, it needs to stay behind.

The whole aspect of a gardens wildlife changes over time when we add a pond to it, a lot of this wildlife you may never see, but it is there and your fish are not the only residents. There is a whole array of wildlife that will move in and take up residence, so to remove one would have a big impact on your gardens wildlife and many creatures if they survive would have to try and find a new home.

This is important if you move to a property that has a pond because it will more than likely be established and have many creatures who live in or around it or visit it regularly. To get rid of it would destroy an important part of that gardens wildlife. It is far better to enjoy it than get rid of it, once in place a pond should be for life.

I have had one in most of the houses I have lived in and when I have moved I have always tried to ensure the new owner like ponds, that way I knew that what I had created was going to be left to thrive and be maintained. I have even gone back to visit a few.

Support the many creatures that live in this world with us by giving them a little haven in your own backyard.

Nice Classical Kitchen Furniture

One of the most prevalent trends over the past five years has been the increasing popularity of classical kitchen styles. As a result, many consumers are choosing more simplified designs such as Shaker flat panelled kitchens with less intricate doors and frames, compared to Victorian styles which were a popular choice in the late 90s.

However, the kitchen industry has had to ensure that classical furniture is suitable for modern demands and as a result it is often combined with up-to-date technology and fixings. This means that internal fittings, bins and hardware that are often seen in the more Germanic modern or minimalistic product ranges are often combined with classical furniture to provide the consumer with the most practical kitchen. In addition, the flexibility of classical handmade furniture means that bespoke designs are able to implement the use of wider and larger, popular American appliances, which is often not possible with other kitchen styles such as the Germanic cabinets.

Despite tough economic conditions, demand for high-end classical kitchens has continued . This could perhaps be attributed to the fact that people recognise the importance of quality and longevity in their purchases and are looking for a long term investment.

Shaker style doors remain the most popular classical kitchen design, with painted wood the most popular finish, although the current trend is to mix accents in
timber (usually Walnut or European Oak) with the majority of the kitchen hand painted. These kitchens are typically becoming grander in both size and design, with higher-end kitchens often combining contrasting hand painted and hardwood finishes, curved cabinets, chopping blocks, pantries and stone work surfaces, which help to add value to the kitchen.

Classical kitchens are set to remain a popular choice amongst consumers as they stand the test of time, provide a comfortable living space rather than just functional food preparation area and are often more flexible, providing the owner with more design choices.

Amazing Swimming Pool Problems

There's nothing worst to get home from work on a hot day, open a beer and put on your swim trunks just to find that the pool is a mess.

Ok ok, one thing maybe worst: To feel envious towards your neighbor because he can relax on a Saturday afternoon, you see, he doesn't have a swimming pool so he doesn't need to deal with all those irritating swimming pool problems.

Did you know that most swimming pool problems are a result of inadequate pool water maintenance? By testing and correcting the pool water chemistry you can have a low-maintenance, sparkling, and clean swimming pool all year round. You won't have to spend lost of money on things like chlorine shock treatment and algaecide if you can prevent the troublesome situation from arising. Monitoring the swimming pool water is extremely important. I would go so far as to say your health and the health of your families might be at risk.

The Best Landscaping: Answers To Creating A Fantastic Landscape

To make a yard more appealing it is a good idea to invest in landscaping. By doing this, the entire appeal of a home will be greatly enriched. Everyone in the neighborhood will enjoy looking at the house because of the outward appearance. If someone wants to make the outside of a home more beautiful, there are a few steps that a person can take in order to do just that.

Oftentimes, when someone moves into a home there will always be some outward work done to it. If this is the case, do not be too quick to take everything up. In fact, more often than not, there is something that a person can do with the plants that are already there. Before a person buys anything, they should access what they already have. This will save the person both money and time.

Separating this job into many stages is the first step when sketching the project blueprint. If a yard is very large, then the gardener may feel swamped with the copious amounts of empty space to fill. Therefore, taking this project section by section is very important. If the lawn is big, separation is even more crucial. Also, keep in mind, the larger a yard, the greater amount of money you will have to spend.

It is also important to consider what time of the year the plants are supposed to bloom. If an entire phase of the lawn only blooms in the fall, then that section will look bad the rest of the time. Making sure that the yard is balanced will add much beauty to the overall look.

Hard, stone or concrete foundations, such as walkways and rocks, must always be protected from roots. If these begin to plague surfaces, your garden will quickly become overran. In order to avoid this from happening, keep all trees at far intervals from such places.

Many gardens have an abundance of accessories such as bricks and stones. While these are typically expensive at the store, many demolition sites are overflowing with such things. Oftentimes, the site owners will give these to gardeners without charge.

In order to save quite a large sum of money, homeowners often do their own gardening. When hiring a landscaper, prices of shrubbery are incredibly more expensive than retail prices.

Creativity is the basis of wonderful landscaping. When toiling the ground for so many hours, gardeners tend to leave a piece of who they are within the land. Allowing the personality of the planter to radiate through the completed project is the key to a beautiful lawn.

Awesome Trees For Your Patio Or Small Garden

Choose Your Tree Wisely

Before you plant a tree, you should find out everything you can about it. Ask yourself these questions: How messy is this tree (as in our example)? How much of a problem will the roots pose? How wide will it get or how tall will it grow? Will I be able to prune it myself or will I have to hire professionals, thus raising the  cost?

In this article, we will discuss a few trees you can plant that will be suitable for a small garden or your patio area. Before you go out to your nursery to purchase your tree, take a moment to observe your patio or garden decor. Trees do have their own personality and you should choose one that will "fit in" accordingly.

The Rain Is Golden

If a tree had manners, it would be the Goldenrain Tree. During the summertime, this tree produces bright yellow clusters of flowers adding more beauty to your small garden or patio decor. If you were to plant this tree, expect it to grow 25 feet to 35 feet high. Another great feature to this tree is that it will grow in many different climates but notably in zone 5 or minus 20 degrees fahrenheit.

Magnolias Are A Favorite

When it comes to a great deciduous tree, one of the all time favorite is the southern magnolia. This tree produces white flowers that are fragrant and large. The flowers this tree bears can grow up to twelve inches in diameter. The southern magnolia is great for those mild winter climate zones, (zone 7 or 0 degrees Fahrenheit)

Please keep in mind that this tree will grow to 80 feet high, so if you don't have the room in your garden, you could use the dwarf varieties.

Remember This And You Will Succeed

Your overall objective is to have a functional garden or patio area. You want your shrubs, trees, and overall outdoor decor to have a purpose. Try to stay away from trees that produces sticky sap or foundation destroying roots.

Further your learning on trees and shrubs before committing to any one tree.

Adorable Organic Gardening - Do Grass Clippings Make a Good Garden Mulch?

The topic of grass clippings to be used as a mulch is a very common question. It is an organic matter and will add benefits to the garden if used properly, but there are things to watch out for.

Understanding the basic function of mulching is very important when choosing a mulch. When applied properly it conserves moisture from both rainfall and other watering practices. You need a mulch that won't mat down and shed water, it needs to be a loose, course texture and a structure to allow water to penetrate through to get to the soil. It also needs to be able to maintain a thickness of about three inches without matting to be effective. A three inch layer of mulch is a good thickness to apply for weed suppression along with serving as an insulator to keep the garden soil warmer in the cold weather and cooler in the hot seasons to protect the root system of especially shallow rooted plants.

Organic mulches are a beneficial mulch to use because of there ability to add nutrients back into the soil as they decay, along with helping to improve the soils structure by creating an environment for the organisms that are beneficial to your gardens soil to survive.

Grass clippings are a common yard waste that shouldn't be or shouldn't exist if proper lawn care is practiced. Mowing a lawn at the proper height, 2/12 inches to 3 1/2 inches in with cool season grass and 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches for warm weather grass and mowing frequently by only cutting one third of the grass plants total height with a mulching blade on the lawnmower will allow the clippings to be fine enough to decompose in place.By allowing these clippings to decompose in place they will add nutrients back into the soil for your grass to benefit from. Grass clippings alone will provide about twenty five percent of the nutrients that grass needs alone, they contain about four percent nitrogen, two percent potassium and one percent phosphorus.

Now about using grass clippings for mulch in your garden. The first concern is contamination from insecticides, weed killers and other chemical fertilizers, especially if they have been applied to the grass within a three week period of when you want to use them. There are insecticides that are not to be applied to vegetable plants. Compaction is another problem with grass clippings. They tend to compact tightly and get soggy. They don't have a loose structure to allow for water to penetrate to the soil easily. When applied in a thick layer, grass clippings will heat up during the process of decomposing. This can damage the root system of certain plants, change the soil temperature that can lead to poor plant growth, and the possibility of disease development. The best method when using grass clippings as a mulch is to compost them first by the method of hot composting.

New Organic Gardening - Growing Onions in You Home Vegetable Garden

One of the oldest know vegetables is the onion. It is commonly used in a variety of recipes in the kitchens around the world and can be purchased in many different way, from fresh, canned, chopped, dehydrated, frozen and even pickled.

Growing onions can be done from seed, transplants or sets. When choosing seed to start your onions, you will have a larger choice of what you can plant, but can take five months for the seedlings to mature enough to be transplanted and they are more susceptible to disease.

Transplants are onion plants that were started from seed that same season. They can be purchased at some local garden centers, depending on where you live and can be purchased from on line sources. They are usually sold in bunches. They have a shorter growing season than seeds do but can have the same problems like disease.

Sets are the most common way that onions are planted in the home garden and are sold at most local garden centers. They are no more than an immature bulb. These sets are started from seed by sowing the seeds tightly together to create a very thick, tight growing crop of seedlings. This results in a stunted plant growth that will produce a small bulb. These small bulbs is what is sold as sets to be planted the next growing season. When purchasing your sets, keep in mind that they should be about 1/2 inch in diameter and solid, soft small bulbs will not produce a good mature onion, even over size sets that are bigger than 1/2 inch usually wont do good.

When choosing the variety of onion you want to grow, there is one thing that needs to be considered. Onions have what is called day length requirements. Some need 13 to 16 hours of daylight and others only need 12 hours. Choose a variety that is best suitable for your area.

Onions will grow best in a raised garden bed with a good healthy soil structure and plenty of compost or composted manure mixed in and drains well. The soil should have a fairly neutral ph level of between 6 and7.When planting seeds the soil needs to be fluffy or very loose.

Sow seeds directly into the garden bed thickly and cover with a 1/2 inch of fine soil. If you mix radish seeds in the same area they will serve two purposes, deter root maggots and help mark the area where the onion seeds were planted. Once the seedlings start to grow you can start to thin them to about 1 inch apart and then in about a month thin them to 6 inches apart. When you thin them this second time you will want to pull back some of the soil around the bulb to expose the top and sides, this is a great way to induce the development of the bulb.

When planting transplants you want to space then 4 to 6 inches apart and about 2 inches deep.If you are planning on harvesting the onions young then you will want to use the closer 4 inch spacing.

Sets are the third method of planting onions. When purchasing sets you can figure that one pound is enough to plant a fifty foot row. Trench your rows out about 2 inches deep and place the sets with the stem end up. This is the one thing that you will need to watch for when planting. Once you have the sets in place cover with a good garden soil and maintain then with the same methods as transplants.

Time to get ready to harvest your onions is when you see the tops start to turn yellow. At this time you want to bend the greens over horizontally, this will stop the sap from flowing through the stem and put all the plants energy into the maturing bulb. A couple days after you do this you will see the tips starting to turn brown, it is time to pull the onion bulbs from the ground. Do this on a sunny day and lay the bulbs on the ground to dry. When laying the out cover the bulbs by laying the bulbs in a row and covering the next row with the greens . This will help to prevent sun scalding.

Amazing Patio Landscaping: Answers To Creating A Wonderful Landscape

Investing in landscaping is a great idea if someone wants to make a yard more attractive. The entire allure of the home will become greater if completed properly. The outward appeal of a home will have the entire neighborhood talking. With just some simple tactics any home can increase its attractiveness.

Oftentimes, when someone moves into a home there will always be some outward work done to it. If this is the case, do not be too quick to take everything up. In fact, more often than not, there is something that a person can do with the plants that are already there. Before a person buys anything, they should access what they already have. This will save the person both money and time.

When a person first begins organizing designs, dividing the project into different phases is the first step. This way the person will not become overwhelmed by the vast amount of space and can take everything one phase at a time. This step is especially important if the yard is large. The more amount of space a yard is, the more someone will have to purchase.

Understanding the blooming patterns of each plant purchased is an important thing to grasp. The lawn must be balanced throughout all times of the year. No homeowner wants an entire portion of the lawn dead while the other half flourishes. A garden without continuity and consistency will never reach its full potential.

Protecting solid foundations such as rocks, concrete blocks, and driveways, is important. Large trees have roots which can damage these surfaces. When planting, keep trees a far distance from these places.

When looking for additions to a garden, consider visiting a local demolition site. Many workers will allow gardeners to take bricks and rocks. This saves money, because buying rocks from stores is very expensive.

Amazing Conquer Your Fear of DIY Projects - A Fireplace Make Over Story

In our suffering economy, it's more important than ever that we consider taking on home repair or home decorating projects ourselves to save money.

My most brilliant and talented Mother can't leave anything plain and drab. She always finds a way to make it unique and special. She's an amazing creature who gave me my love of art at a very early age.

I watched this woman, a raving beauty from the time she was a teen, flip a washing machine upside down and put a new water pump on it, fix her own car, raise 6 children, run a household, build furniture and fix the kitchen plumbing, then turn around and paint the most delicate paintings that hung in our home.

The fireplace in her home was outdated and just not her style at all. The 70's style, dark green tile didn't go with her neutral furnishings and the stucco exterior was plain and uninteresting.

Did she call a contractor? Not my Mother. At the tender age of 70 years old, she simply sat down with a pencil and paper and began drawing a sketch of what she envisioned her new fireplace would look like.

With her general idea in place, she decided a mantle was in order. Since the existing fireplace didn't have one, she delighted at the thought of being able to display favorite candle holders, family photos and miscellaneous trinkets on its surface.

Her design consisted of a half box shelf with a scalloped front, open back and straight sides so off she went to purchase plywood and began cutting the pieces with her trusty electrical saw.

She created the scrolled front edge with a jig saw then fit all of the pieces together to create the box. She used wood screws attach the sides to the front, then after sanding and a few good coats of primer, she attached it to the fireplace with concrete screws and metal brackets.

Using standard plaster of paris and an ornamental mold, she then added cast plaster detail to the front of the mantle to give it further architectural interest and design. These pieces were simply attached using standard joint compound as the adhesive.

She painted the entire surround a beautiful soft brown, then wiped a darker brown glaze over the top of the ornamentation to bring out the detail further. It now took on the look of an expensive, hand carved mantle of wood. Wanting more drama, she then added hints of gold paint to the ornaments and replaced the dark green tile with an updated sandstone style. This brought the entire project together in such a beautiful way! Now, her unsightly fireplace has been transformed in to the rooms most beautiful focal point.

My point of this story isn't just to give you the basic "How To" of creating a fireplace mantle, but also to teach you that in order to save money, in order to get what you want, in order to update or modify your home your self, you have to conquer your fear.

If we examine what causes fear, we find that it's typically because we are afraid of the "unknown". Questions build in our minds:

"I've never done this before"
"Will it turn out right?"
"What if I fail?"
"How can I do this properly?"

Back to the internet and your local hardware man! Anything, (and I mean anything) you want to learn to do is on the internet at various "How To" websites or your local hardware man is more than delighted to give you detailed instruction if not to actually offer free classes.

You cannot conquer fear without trying the very thing you fear at least once.

If you want to re-tile your bath, take a class or purchase just enough material to play with the process at home before you purchase everything it would take to do a full project. A few dollars invested to remove the "fear" goes a long way to saving you hundreds, if not thousands to have a contractor do your project for you.

So venture out my friend! Once you conquered the fear of one "DIY" project, you can now feel confident that you will be able to conquer the fear of others. The whole concept of the "Do it Yourself" movement is to just "Do it"!

Modern Useful Fishing Tips For Hikers

Plastic Bait

There's no getting away from plastics. Where fishing equipment once was fashioned out of wood and other natural materials, molded plastics of every description have found their way into ponds, lakes, and streams. Multicolored, squiggly, wiggly things of every description are being used widely by anglers of every experience level. Some plastic lures are even coated with scented fish attractants-a kind of fishy perfume, if you will-that, combined with all kinds of noise-making bobbles, make for a lure that screams to be eaten!

The most common plastic lure is shaped like a worm, round at the head with a flat tail that causes the lure to swish and sashay as it is reeled in. "Starter" worms are six inches long and are shaded purple. They are designed to have a hook pushed through them in much the same manner as a real worm, but doing this with a plastic worm won't remind you of the meathook scenes in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. When going this route, you'll need to use a special hook meant for use with plastic worms; such hooks won't do live worms. Feed some monofilament fishing line through the hook eye and tie a standard Trilene knot on the hook. (Don't use a swivel snap when rigging a plastic worm.) Push the hook through the worm to conceal the hook eye and knot in the worm's head. The hook should also be somewhat concealed in the body of the worm. Since plastic worms used in this configuration are quite light, they won't cast as far as more heavily weighted lines, and their effectiveness is related to the angler's willingness to play the worm in the water, gently jerking the lure every so often as a tease to the fish. For a more sincere cast, attach some weight to the line with split shot squeezed on to the line about a foot above the worm. Bring the worm in slowly.

Plastic lures also come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. So, besides standard plastic worms, you might want to try experimenting with plastic reproductions of newts, frogs, minnows, crayfish, eels, and bugs to see what works for you. But at the end of the day, it's not the jig but the jigger who carries the day by bringing back a fish or two to fry up at the campsite.

Hooking

Like most things that rely on tradition for explanation, fish-hook sizes are classified according to a system seemingly based on the illogical thoughts of a confused drunkard. To the novice, the numbers relating to fish hooks bear no relation their sizes whatsoever. In fact, there is some method to fish-hook madness: Assuming that "1" represents the average size hook, with hooks getting smaller as they go up in numbers (in multiples of two)-say 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, with a size-2 hook being bigger than a size-10 hook, for instance.

Hooks that are bigger than a size-1 hook are expressed with a number and a zero on each side of a slash (1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0). Notice here that hook sizes are numbered sequentially and can include ascending numbers that aren't multiples of 2. "Standard" hook sizes used with worms and other bait are usually sized at 2, 4, 6, and 8. Smaller hooks are used to catch smaller fish, and bigger hooks, larger fish. "Treble" hooks (three points) that you see on artificial lures follow the same numbering system.

Catching

Catching a fish is a lot like playing a good game of poker. You can't change the cards you're dealt, but you can change the way you play them. Luck is involved, but skill is just as important.

There are days when the fish just aren't biting. Or times when you're fishing in one place, but the fish are off somewhere else. But you can really increase your odds of catching a fish if you know what you're doing.

Some of the best times to fish from shore are early in the morning and at dusk. In the middle of the afternoon, on a hot sunny day, you'll have a better chance of finding fish in deeper water-it's where they go to cool off! If you are fishing in a stream, for example, this may be a good time for you to look for them in deeper pools.

The first thing you need to know is what types of fish can be found in the wildlife area you will be exploring. Look through some of the brochures on the region; call or write to the wildlife department in the area (or the local outfitter). Ask about the best time of year to fish, where to find the hot spots in the area, and the best time of day to go. Especially important is to find out when the legal fishing season for a specific species of fish begins and ends, where you can buy your fishing license, and how much it will cost. If you're fishing in a national park, you can usually buy a national park fishing license that enables you to fish throughout the park for a limited period.

There are fish you won't be able to catch with your ultralight gear, such as salmon or muskellunge-some weigh as much as a small child. On the other hand, perch, rock bass, trout, smallmouth bass, walleye, and even small pike are fair game. They weigh just a few pounds each, and all are worth their weight in dinner. These fish can all be snared with your ultralight rod and reel and your film container's-worth of tackle.

Once you know which types of fish are in the area, you can narrow down the tackle you need to bring on your trip. Ask your local sporting-goods store to help you select the right lures for the fish you'll be trying to catch. Not all fish respond to live bait; some respond to nothing else. Trout are one of the tastiest and most beautiful fish out there, but also the fussiest. They usually respond just to flies, but when they are hungry enough have been known to chase a worm or a light lure. Some fly-fishing purists may cringe at the thought, but I have caught many brown trout from shore using just a hook, a weight, and a small worm. Besides the fish pictured previously, you may encounter bluegill, sunfish, and crappie in many lakes. There are many varieties of bass, so the picture here may not match what you catch.

Tip

You need to get a fishing license before you can start fishing. These licenses can usually be purchased at local bait shops, grocery stores, or national park offices. The license limits the species you can fish for and the seasons you can fish for them. Sometimes there are limits on how many fish of a particular type you're allowed to take out of the water.

Different types of fish live in different habitats; most have their preferences. Some live in lakes, others prefer rivers and streams. Trout, one of the most desirable fish to catch, can be found in all three. River fishing can be difficult for the beginner. It usually involves wading in the river-and often the water is moving so rapidly that it's hard to tell whether the fish are biting. Beginners may find lake and stream fishing easier.

When fishing in streams, look for potentially deep pools where the fish may be resting. I've found that when fishing in a lake from the shore, it can be a good idea to put your hook near a shady spot-underneath some low-hanging branches or near some big rocks. This can be especially effective on a hot sunny day. Just be careful not to snag your line on a rock or a tree-that's a great way to lose your tackle!

Best of How to Fire Low-Fire Metal Clay With a Torch

There is a simple way to fire metal clay without using a kiln by simply using a butane torch. Low-fire metal clay is called ‘low-fire’ because it does not require the same amount of heat that standard clays need. Because of this it means that you can use a held hand torch to burn out the organic material in the clay which in turn will produce hard metal. The sizes need to be 25 grams per firing in order for the process to be done in this way.

This method is ideal for those who are just starting out or are not ready to purchase a kiln, especially good for those who just make occasional pieces of jewellery. The process is simple and to get started you will need low-fire metal clay that is ready for firing, a butane torch, a jar of water, metal tongs and a fire or heat resistance pad or alternatively a fire break built for this purpose.

The first thing to do is to set the dried metal clay you want to fire on the heated brick or pad and make sure that you have a the tongs and jar of water at hand. It is also important that you use a room with good ventilation for obvious reasons.

Once the metal clay is in position point the torch towards the clay holding the flame around two inches away, moving in circular motions to make sure that the whole piece of clay is caught by the flame.

You need to continue this process until the clay is glowing. If the clay starts to bubble or shine, step back with the torch as this means that the clay is getting over-heated.

Continue heating until the clay turns an orange colour then after two minutes move the flame off completely. Don’t worry if the clay starts to smoke, this is normal as it’s the organic material being burned out from the clay.

When the piece is cool, it can be dipped into the jar of water to help speed up the cooling process.

Once the piece has cooled it can then be shaped and polished, ready to turn into jewellery.

Polishing is simple and you can buy specialised polishing paper to polish any metals from silver, bronze, brass, copper and gold.

The paper comes in varies grits and colours, and the higher the grit the shinier the product becomes.

The silver clay, of course, does shine up a little more quickly because it is fine silver, but with enough time and elbow grease, you can create a high shine on the sterling sheet and even copper sheet as well. When using the polishing paper, make sure to move it around in either a circular or a figure-eight pattern to help polish it evenly avoid making lines or scratches across the metal piece.

So it really is that simple, there is no need to invest in expensive equipment to start making jewellery just following these simple instructions and you can be on your way.

Best Taking Care of Your Koi Fish Through Proper Water Quality Care

Ever since the Japanese interbred simple carp and began creating the beautiful fish known as koi, people have been enjoying these beautiful fish and keeping them as pets. Koi are perhaps the most popular of freshwater fish kept in backyard ponds and they can live for many years in these environments. That is, as long as the ponds themselves are well kept.

While koi fish are a hardy breed, like most other types of fish, they need a constant supply of fresh, clean, oxygenated water. Once your pond gets dirty, it won't be long before your fish become sick and in worst case scenarios, die. Let's look at some of the ways that a good water filter can help to increase the lifespan of your koi.

First of all, your koi filter will need to take the place of what nature does for fish in the wild. In open waters, the waste from fish is filtered simply because of the amount of water that exists in that environment. The waste from fish that is created never concentrates in an area in large enough quantities to do harm to the fishes system. In addition, the natural currents of the oceans work to move the waste around thus increasing the dissipation of this waste matter. In a small pond environment, however, the water can quickly become contaminated by the waste from the fish. A good koi water filter will work to mimic the natural process of the oceans in two ways:

1. Mechanical - This aspect of the filter will work to rid the water of solid waste-The flow of the water as well as gravity allow the solid waste to become trapped in the filter to allow for easy removal

2. Biological - The solid waste, even if it is removed, leaves behind toxic by-products such as ammonia. The biological function of the koi filter uses bacteria to break down the harmful waste into less harmful nitrates. Nitrates can only harm the fish if found in large amounts.

While the filter is a key component of a health fish pond, that alone may not be enough to do the job. In the case of a larger pond, you will want to add pump. Pumps are great additions to koi filters as they work to push the water through the filter, thereby trapping all the contaminants.

In addition to a quality filter for your koi pond, you may want to add a waterfall or even a fountain to your pond. While these add to the overall beauty of your backyard setting, the falling water works to stir up the water and is known as aeration, or adding oxygen to the water. If the water is stagnant, the oxygen contained in the water may be used up by the fish and they will surely die. If you take the time to install a proper koi water filter, clean it regularly and make proper use of a pump and/or waterfall as necessary, your koi pond will provide a healthy and happy home for your prized koi fish.
