My mom has a green thumb. Unfortunately, we were not endowed with the ability to wield money, so we only have a limited space for her "garden". So from personal experiences, here's what we've come up so far:

1. We don't have enough space (as mentioned previously), so it also follows that we don't have easily accessible soil lying around the house. So instead of buying soil, my mom opted to buy some items for a planters mix. Planters mix (or also known as potting soil) should have organic material that can hold water (usually peat moss), inorganic materials for space for the plant's roots and drainage (like sand or vermiculite), and nutrients (some fertilizer, limestone or plain compost). Blend 1 part organic, 1 part inorganic and add some nutrients for the perfect mix.

2. Some plants will need watering everyday. The rule of thumb is to wait until at least an inch of top layer of soil is slightly dry (you'll know of this when the soil is lighter in color and texture; also, it is usually dry to the touch). You can water it until water runs out of the drainage holes - this is to encourage healthy root formation. (Of course, if it's an herb, check first if it's okay to do so just to make sure that you are not drowning it.) Hanging planters and clay pots tend to dry more quickly, especially in the summer. Make sure to check twice a day and water them if necessary. Wash with tepid (never cold) water to avoid shocking the plant roots.

3. Sunlight should always be considered when selecting plants for your container garden. Though we had a small space for Mom's garden-haven, we were fortunate that sunlight was ever present in that area. All plants need to photosynthesize (light, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide and air interact with water within the plant to produce the necessary sugar and starches it needs), and a plant can only do so if there is sunlight. Sunlight exposure depends on the plant's tolerance to light. Some may need full sunlight, others may make do with just partial sun, and some can go by living under a shade with very minimal light. Check (and if necessary, research) the plant's needs to be sure.

I thought I didn't have what it takes to do gardening. But with container gardening, as my mother pointed out, you can't go wrong as long as you care for your plants - check regularly if they need "food", see if they have aphids or other insects on their leaves, and love them as you would care for a pet.

You have the patio furniture, the plants, the BBQ - but something seems to be missing. Perhaps a splash of colour and comfort is just what you need! And it's easy to add by making your own seat cushions for the patio furniture. Here's how - the quick and easy way!

For this example, we will be making seat cushions that are 18" x 18". Go to your local fabric store to buy the following supplies: 1" thick foam and polyester material that has been treated for outdoor use to be mold and mildew resistant.

Once you have your supplies, cut the foam to the desired size - 18" x 18". Next, cut 2 pieces of material so that they are two inches larger than the seat cushion - for this example, you would need to cut each piece 20" x 20". The material can be the same for both sides, or choose different patterns. If you choose different patterns, then you can simple flip the cushion over and voila! You have a totally different look. One side could be strips and the other side could be a floral pattern.

Next, place the two pieces of material together, wrong side facing out. Sew three of the sides together and then turn the cover inside out. Slip the foam into the cover. Before sewing the last side shut, you will need to create some tie strings, in case you want or need to tie the cushion to the patio furniture.

Here's how to create the tie strings for the back end. Choose material that is either the same as the cushion or choose a complimentary, solid colour. Then cut 4 pieces from the material that measure 1" wide and 12" long. Work on one piece at a time - fold it in half (so now it will only be 1/2" wide) and sew the edges together.

You are now ready to sew the tie strings on and sew the back of the cushion shut. Place the tie strings in place - 2 at each end. Finally, sew the edges together. If you prefer, you can sew a zipper or Velcro at the back of the cushion to keep it shut, instead of sewing the material. This way, you can always slip the cover off the foam inside and put the cover in the wash or change covers.

Now you are ready to put your new seat cushions on your patio furniture. Sit back, relax and enjoy outdoor living at its best!

Fire risk assessments are a very funny thing, we ask ourselves what they're for and who has to do them, also what cost are these courses and how they have helped the private sector earn a tremendous amount of money out of them. The new regulations are very unclear and much has been made about the quality of the fire risk assessments in use. I use a standard template that encourages common sense and the practicalities of fire. Are the current measures up to standard? What are the requirements by law. How likely is the risk of fire, and what do the new mitigation strategies offer in terms of reducing risk?

These have replaced the old fire certificate and can be done by anyone who is deemed competent under the eyes of the law. Competence is a funny one.
