About Building a Koi Pond - Finding a Reputable Contractor

After thinking about your new Koi pond project you have decided to contract out the work. For most this is a good decision. Let the experts to the heavy lifting. After all, you want to start enjoying your new Koi pond as quickly as possible and with as few headaches as possible. But how do you go about finding the right contractor to work with?

Certainly you can ask friends and fellow Koi owners for recommendations. This is always a good place to start. And, you can search online and the yellow pages for contractors in your area. But even if you find a contractor that comes highly recommended, it doesn't always mean they are right for you. Make sure you ask the right questions when evaluating contractors.

Make sure you find out how Koi ponds they have built. Make sure you find out about past Koi pond projects. A Koi pond is very different from an ordinary garden pond. A Koi pond requires a different drainage system, filtration system and pump than a garden pond. Be sure your prospective contractor can demonstrate he knows the difference.

Ask him to talk about some of the problems he has encountered in building past ponds. Hopefully he'll be honest and describe some of the things that can and have caused problems on other projects. If he has the right kind of experience he'll have had problems at one time or another. Ask him what the biggest and most common problems have been and what had to be done to correct them. Understand that unavoidable or unforeseen problems can always arise that will delay or increase the cost of the project.

One of the most important items in evaluating contractors is getting references. Make sure you get at least three or four but more shows he has confidence in his work and is willing to show it. With any reference you have to check it out. Talk to the customer and if you can, go by and see the pond. Try and discuss the project and ask them if they could do anything different, what it would be.

Follow these simple common sense steps and you increase the odds of a successful project dramatically. Just remember that with any construction project things do go wrong and schedules are missed. That's just part of the project. If you've done your homework and selected a good contractor, chances are good you'll be very pleased with the end result.
